Care Home Funding, Allowance and Benefits Available
What are the different types of care home funding, benefits and allowances available to people in need of care?
Navigating the costs of care in a care home can be overwhelming, but understanding the funding options available from the Government or NHS can help simplify the process. Funding options depend on variety of factors.
What determines the type of funding I can receive?
Several factors determine your eligibility for funding, including:
- Location of care: Whether care is provided in a private home or a care home setting
- The social and health care needs: Specific care requirements based on your health
- Ability to perform daily activities: Your capability to manage everyday tasks, such as washing and dressing
- Financial situation: Your current financial situation
The complexity of your needs will influence whether you qualify for one type of funding or a combination of different sources.
Benefits, Allowances, and NHS Payments
- Local Authority contributions:Depending on your financial assessment, the Local Authority may cover some or all of your weekly care fees. The amount varies across the UK from LA to LA and are determined by local eligibility criteria and the assessed financial situation of the individual.
- NHS Continuing Health Care (CHC): This funding covers long-term care for those with significant health needs.
- Funded Nursing Care (FNC): Provides weekly payments for nursing care. Although available UK-wide, the amount varies by country.
- Personal Care (Scotland only): For Scottish residents aged 65 and over, this benefit replaces Attendance Allowance and is reviewed annually each April.
- Attendance Allowance: Available to those aged 65 and over, this allowance is based on health and mobility criteria. It stops after 28 days if you move into a care home and rely on public funding.
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP): Previously known as Disability Living Allowance, PIP is for individuals under state retirement age. There are two components to this benefit a daily living part and a mobility element
All the above benefits and allowances are subject to their own rigorous and separate assessments.
