Hillside Lodge Care Home Olympic Torch Relay

Residents and staff outside Hillside Lodge care home in Braeside

Residents at Hillside Lodge Care Home in Berwick have created their own Olympic torch and over 70 local schools, charities, businesses and community groups have been involved in a month-long torch relay, following an invitation from the care home on social media.

On 17th June, residents visited Tweedmouth Prior Park First School and handed the torch to pupils to start the relay. Some of the community participants include: Berwick Cancer Cars, The Grove School, Border Links, Berwick Animal Rescue Kennels, Holy Trinity First School, Berwick Community Trust, HospiceCare North Northumberland, Berwick Museum and Art Gallery and Berwick Youth Project.

On 20th July, the torch returned to Hillside Lodge Care Home, carried by members of the ‘Tweed Striders’ running club, who were welcomed by residents and members of the community who took part in the relay. Andrew Smith from Berwick Cancer Cars piped the runners in on his bagpipes.

The torch relay kicked off the care home’s ‘Going for Gold’ Olympic activities which included a sports day held on 26th July where residents competed in a series of events designed for all abilities to take part in, including ‘oeuf et cuillère’ races, armchair archery, balloon volleyball and tabletop hockey.

The care home’s Magic Moments Coordinator, Rachael Howlett, said: “We were overwhelmed by the response from local people who wanted to be part of our community Olympic torch relay after I posted an invitation on the ‘Berwick-upon-Tweed Notice Board’ Facebook group to see if anyone would like to join in. The residents here at Hillside Lodge have been following the torch’s progress as people have been sending in pictures of its journey through Berwick and the surrounding areas. It’s fantastic to have so many locals getting involved, and it’s been a great way to keep our residents connected to the people and places in their community.”

FSHC Group continue partnership with VIVALDI to reduce infections and improve the lives of residents in care homes

Four Seasons Health Care Group partners with Vivaldi Social Care research study

Between June 2020 and March 2023, Four Seasons Health Care Group worked with University College London (UCL) researchers and the Department of Health and Social Care on a national research study called VIVALDI. The study investigated COVID-19 infections and the impact of the disease in care homes. The results of the study informed policy decisions around the best approach to testing and prevention of infections in care homes, helping to protect those living and working in care settings.

Four Seasons and brighterkind care homes in England have now partnered with the VIVALDI Social Care Study which builds on the learnings of the original study and aims to reduce infections in care homes.  Four Seasons and brighterkind residents and families will receive more detailed information about the study and how to opt out of participating, should they wish.

Commissioned by The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) in collaboration with UCL, The Outstanding Society, Care England, and NHS England, this new study will monitor infections in care homes, including COVID-19, flu, norovirus, and urinary tract infections. VIVALDI’s mission is to improve the quality of life for people living, visiting, and working in care homes while reducing the risk of infections and avoiding hospital admissions.

What is the study doing?

The Vivaldi Study team are collecting NHS numbers from residents in our care homes in England and will link these NHS numbers to other data already held by the NHS. The research team, public health experts from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), care providers and people who live and work in care homes will work together to agree on the best way to use these data to measure infections and outbreaks.

Examples might include measuring:
*How many residents had a urine infection
*How effective vaccines are at protecting residents from serious illness
(The number of outbreaks in each care home

The study team expect to develop about 10 measures and will ensure that the measures they use do not disadvantage any homes that take part in the study. They will also use the data to create an anonymized research database that can be used by researchers to find new ways to protect people living, working, and visiting care homes. Only projects that have been approved by people who live and work in care homes will be allowed to use the research database.

Why is the study doing this?

During the COVID-19 pandemic, people in care homes worked together with researchers and the Government to work out how to stop COVID-19. We want to build on what we learned in the pandemic to tackle other infections and outbreaks, like flu, and norovirus which have a major negative impact on residents and their families. The first step to do this is to measure infections and outbreaks in each care home, which is why we seek permission to access residents’ data. The NHS already measures infection levels in hospitals, but no one measures infections in care homes.

What should I do if I do NOT want my relative’s information to be used in this study?

If you do not want your relative’s data to be included, please tell someone who works in the care home. They will make sure your relative’s details are removed from the list.

Will the study team be able to see any of your relative’s personal information?

No – residents’ personal information will not be visible to anyone who analyses the data. NHS England will remove residents’ NHS numbers before the project team receives any data. This is completed in line with the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) 2018.

Jacqui Ritchie, Chief Operating Officer, Four Seasons Health Care Group, said: “Following our partnership with VIVALDI during the pandemic, we are delighted to again be part of this important research study.  Our help in this work to better understand infections in care homes is crucial to improve prevention and control, and the wellbeing of residents, their families and team members.”

That’s why we’ve provided helpful information about what to expect when visiting a care home, how to get the most out of your visit and a helpful checklist to print out and take with you. Plus, our Home Managers are eager to share their top tips for finding the right care home.

Four Seasons Health Care Group advice for choosing the right care home

“My tips for anyone looking for the right care home would be to keep an eye out for key things such as; do the residents and team look happy? Is the home clean and tidy? Is the team interacting with the residents and relatives? Finally yet importantly, what is your initial instinct?”

– Karen, Home Manager at Benarty View Care Home in Kelty

“The most important thing is having a thorough initial assessment to determine the needs of the resident which is essential for choosing the right care home.”

– Ruby, Home Manager at The Granby Care Home in Harrogate

“The right care home should have the feel of a home, be welcoming and have a team working in a way that promotes dignity, respect and person centred values.”

A gift guide for people with dementia

Gifts for people with dementia

Thinking about getting your loved one with dementia a gift?

Knowing what gifts to buy your loved one with dementia can be a tricky task but one well worth doing. Selecting gifts for someone with dementia can demonstrate your care and understanding whilst also providing them with a gift that can stimulate their senses, promote comfort, and bring them joy.

It is important to pick a gift that is suited to your loved one’s tastes and changing abilities. You may want to consider what stage of dementia your loved one is at as there are different gifts to suit all stages. Jigsaw Puzzles

Jigsaw puzzles such as a 35-Piece puzzles can be a good option for those with early stages of dementia and 13-Piece can work for those in the mid stages of dementia. The specialised larger puzzle pieces can aid those that may struggle with tactile skills.

Dementia Action Week 2024

Dementia Action Week 2024 13th May - 19th

Dementia Action Week is here! This is an annual campaign with a goal to raise awareness about dementia, challenge stigmas associated with the condition and encourage people to take action on dementia. This week serves as a powerful reminder of the millions of lives touched by this complex condition worldwide.

One of the focus’ of Dementia Action Week is to promote awareness and understanding of dementia. Learning about dementia is crucial in raising awareness of the condition. A better understanding of the condition helps us to better understand their experiences, challenges, and needs, fostering a more inclusive and supportive society.

Dementia Action Week

What is Dementia?

Dementia is an umbrella term for many conditions and illnesses which produce similar signs and symptoms and therefore are referred to collectively as dementia. The key features of dementia are cognitive decline and disease.

Types of Dementia

There are over 200 different types of conditions that have been identified in which dementia is the key symptom, but the underlying causes are different.

The most common types are:

It is also possible for a person to live with two types of dementia together, usually Alzheimer’s disease and Vascular Dementia or Alzheimer’s disease dementia with Lewy bodies. This is called Mixed Dementia. Approximately one in ten people who live with dementia are diagnosed with having more than one type.

Our Approach to Dementia Care

At Four Seasons Health Care Group, our approach to dementia care is a positive, life enhancing approach which is demonstrated in exceptional experiences for our residents, delivered by teams who are committed to making a difference and providing care through positive relationships.

We recently introduced our new approach to Dementia care into all our care homes.  This is supported by a large investment into our team, new approach to our dementia care and newly trained Dementia Champions in many homes leading dementia awareness, understanding and care for our residents.

We have trained 230 Dementia Champions, who have gone on to deliver over 5000 (and still growing!) workshops into our homes. Dementia Action Week is not just a week; our team members are on a continuous journey to promote awareness, understanding, and helping to take action on dementia!

All of our teams’ hard work can be seen in the results of our 2024 Customer Satisfaction Survey, with families providing some lovely feedback, for example:

Mum has advanced dementia and the care for her and her needs

gives me comfort that she is safe, well and being looked after.

Top tips for decluttering

Downsizing can be a practical and emotional minefield – you’ve gathered a lifetime’s worth of possessions and don’t know quite where to start. So here are some tips from Four Seasons Health Care Group on how to make decluttering less daunting.

1. DECLUTTER A LITTLE BIT AT A TIME AND GIVE YOURSELF PLENTY OF TIME

The first decluttering tip in later life is to give yourself plenty of time. Planning to tackle the work in bite sized pieces, maybe for 20 minutes a day or one day a week, makes it less overwhelming.

2. TAKE DECISIONS AND SORT ITEMS INTO DEFINED BOXES

It can be helpful to have boxes for each of the following categories to add things to as you declutter – Keep, Throw Away, Sell, Donate and Give to Family.

3. GIVE YOURSELF A DECLUTTERING SCHEDULE

Decluttering is something that’s easy to put off, so set a schedule to follow to get the work done.

4. ASK FOR HELP IF YOU NEED IT

If you are feeling overwhelmed don’t be afraid to ask for help from a family member or friend.
Another great resource are local organisations that will pick up donations and things you are decluttering right from your home.

5. MAKE PRACTICAL DECISIONS FIRST BY STARTING IN AN EASIER SPACE

Start by dealing with easier spaces like kitchens and bathrooms that need practical decisions that don’t carry emotional attachments.
Moving into a care home will likely be a big lifestyle change you’ll need to adapt to, but think of it as moving into a hotel where all you need are your clothes and personal essentials – you’ll soon be on the right track.

6. TACKLE ONE SPACE AT A TIME

Focus on one room at a time and complete that area before moving on. Then break each room down into little steps you can work on one at a time such as a drawer or a cupboard.

7. RECOGNISE LIFESTYLE CHANGES

Another important aspect to take into account when decluttering is that you’ve likely had some lifestyle changes in your retirement years. You may no longer need formal and work clothes or sports equipment, dancing shoes, to name but a few… so these can simply go.

8. GIVE YOURSELF TIME TO REMINISCE

Take time to look through things you’ve saved and reflect on the memories. Remembering is a great way to eventually get to a place where you feel ready to let go. Just keep reminding yourself that if it were truly special or important, it’s likely it would not have sat untouched and gathering dust for years until now!

We hope these tips will be helpful in your pursuit to declutter in your retirement years!
